Icelandic Sweater: "Lopapeysa"
Collection: Everyday Connections
This warm wool sweater, or "lopapeysa", uses typical Scandinavian snow flake designs using two different colors of yarn.
Icelandic sweaters are characterized by a wide band of design around the neck and shoulders and a matching thin band at the hems of the body and sleeves.
When Iceland became fully independent from Denmark in 1944, the lopapeysa took on a patriotic meaning, becoming a symbol of Icelandic identity. It is an important cultural item in the country. More recently, it’s became a global symbol of Iceland and is a favorite tourist purchase.
Icelandic sweaters are incredibly warm thanks to the lopi (unspun yarn). There is more air in this yarn than would be found in spun yarn, and the insulation is therefore greater. Icelandic sheep wool is known to be warm and light, but it’s also quite hard to handle, making it a challenge for even seasoned knitters.
