Greek Ancient Greek Holy Figure Statue: "Artemis"
Collection: Spiritual Connections
This is a model of a statue of Artemis, the Olympian goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals. In ancient art, Artemis was usually depicted as a girl dressed in a short knee-length chiton and equipped with a hunting bow and quiver of arrows. Her symbols also included a hunting dog, a stag and the moon.
Artemis believed that she had been chosen by the Fates to be a midwife, particularly since she had assisted her mother in the delivery of her twin brother, Apollo. As such, she was the goddess of childbirth and the protectress of girl children until they married.
Artemis, could be a destructive god, but was able to prevent the evils which she would inflict and could cure and alleviate the sufferings of mortals. She was especially the protectress of the young, including young suckling animals, and of the game ranging through the forests of the mountains. Artemis thus also came to be regarded as the goddess of the flocks and the chase.
