German Woman's Traditional Dress: "Dirndl"
Collection: Everyday Connections
The German outfit, known as "dirndl", is a specialized traditional costume worn by women particularly in the southern part of Germany known as Bavaria. The dirndl itself consists of a low cut bodice, typically laced up in front, attached to a full skirt, worn with an apron.
In the South German dialects, 'dirndl' originally referred to a young woman or a girl, and 'dirndlkleid' to the dress. Nowadays, 'dirndl' may equally refer to either a young woman, or to the dress.
There are different dirndls for different seasons: heavy with long sleeves for the winter and lighter with short sleeves for the summer.
Although not an everyday dress, many women may wear it at formal occasions and during certain traditional events. It is popular among young women at the time of the Oktoberfest in Munich.
