This hat, made from thick wool felt, is worn by men in the Pshavi area of Georgia. In Georgian this hat is called, "Svanuri kudi," which means, "hat from region Svaneti''. In Svaneti there are high mountains. This hat is worn year round to protect against the sun, cold and, being waterproof, the rain.

The hat takes about 30 hours to make. The black cording that crosses over the top of the hat may represent a typical greeting from that region, "May the cross protect you."

A native of that region states that the hat may be used as a water bowl as well when the wearer comes to a mountain stream.
