These shoes, from Breton in southwest France, are embroidered.

The embroidery itself is an important part of Breton regional cultural heritage. This art draws its inspiration from Celtic motifs. Each basic design represents a value, or a feeling: sun - joy, heart - love, planet - destiny, ram's horn - power, saw tooth - work, chain - faith in God, peacock fan or feathers - pride, "triskell" - Celtic three-legged design representing the three vital elements of air, water and earth.

The shoes were made by Roger Nabad Chaussonnier, a shoemaker in Quimper, the capital of Cornouaille in France.
