Ethiopian Jewish Religious Art: "Sheba and Solomon"
Collection: Spiritual Connections
This Ethiopian art refers to the Old Testament story of King Solomon. It serves a similar purpose to stained glass in Christian churches and cathedrals, telling a story visually. The captions for each pane are in the Ethiopian Amharic language.
Solomon, the son of ancient Jewish King David and Bathsheba, is renowned in the Old Testament for his God-given wisdom and riches. He also had many wives and concubines. The Queen of Sheba, who may have ruled an area in what is now Ethiopia or Yemen, had heard stories of Solomon and his worship of God. She wanted to find out for herself whether the stories were true. She brought lavish gifts, including precious stones, gold, spices and frankincense, for him and then tested him with hard questions. Satisfied with his answers, she gave him the gifts. They had sexual relations and when she left to return to her country, she was pregnant with a son. The story is told in 1 Kings 10.
