Josiah Wedgwood, an English potter, in the 1770s, developed a blue clay, called Jasper ware, used in earthernware objects. He experimented with more than 3,000 samples to get the color he wanted. The main themes on the company's jasper ware have all been taken from ancient mythologies: Roman, Greek or Egyptian.
