The first Toby Jug was made in the early 18th century. It was a jovial, seated, male figure, with a mug in his hand and a tricorn hat which made a pouring spout. He was dressed in clothes of the time; a long coat with low pockets, waistcoat, cravat, knee breeches and buckled shoes. Character jugs, like this one, do not include the full body.

Older character Jugs and Toby Jugs are usually made of Earthenware, using a mold. The molds are made once a design is composed using soft clay.  The final product is fired several times in the kiln after several applications of color and other decorative features. Toby Jugs and Character Jugs are still designed and manufactured today in the same way as before, but many are now made from porcelain.

A punch recipe from 17th Century England which might have been drunk from a toby mug included 1 part sour (lemon plus nutmeg or other spices), 2 parts sugar, 3 parts rum, 4 parts water.
