Senet is one of the oldest known board games. The oldest hieroglyphic representing the game dates from 3100 BCE. Board games were a favorite pastime in Egypt, and senet was the most popular of these. It was played by two people, either on elaborate carved and inlayed boards like the one found in Tutankhamen’s tomb, or simply scratched into the earth.

The senet gameboard is a grid of 30 squares, arranged in three rows of ten. A senet board has two sets of pawns (at least five of each). Details of the original game rules are unknown, but some scholars have constructed a set of rules based on snippets of writings from sources spanning a thousand years.
