The darbuka, a chalice shaped drum, is the most popular drum in the Middle East. Goatskin is stretched over the top of the drum. Using the hands and fingers, the drummer can produce a variety of bass (doum) and treble (tekk) sounds. The drummer usually plays the drum while the drum is held horizontally on the lap.

Arabic speakers refer to the drum as either a darbuka or tabla.
