Dutch Display Dolls
Collection: Everyday Connections
These dolls are wearing the Dutch traditional costume associated with Volendam. The Volendam traditional dress is often featured on tourist postcards and posters. However, the Netherlands has a great variety of regional costumes.
The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes. The striped skirt or apron paired with a plain apron or skirt, black skirt, the decorative "kraplap" bib, shawl and the ladies' lace cap, called "hul, are famous all over the world. The wooden shoes, called "klompen," are associated with the Netherlands. And mostly elderly women in the city wear the traditional costumes as part of their daily lives.
The male doll is wearing a traditional costume also. Dutch men typically wear loose-fitting shirts – white and navy blue shirts are the most common. Often, these shirts are adorned with a row or 2 rows of brass buttons that are both functional and decorative.
The jacket is usually black, red, or blue, fitted, and long-sleeved.
Dutch male pants are loose and baggy. They’re usually dark-colored and knee-length or ankle-length. Ankle-length pants legs are not typically tied at the ankle, and just hang loose at the ankle.
Traditional wooden shoes, called "klompen", are part of every outfit. Each shoe is hand-carved from a single piece of wood, it’s durable and protects the foot perfectly. Thick woolen socks prevent blistering.
