"Ta'wiz" amulets contain verses, or suras, from the Qur'an and other Islamic prayers and symbols worn to repel any evil intended for the wearer and to bring good luck. The text chosen is specific to the situation for which the talisman is being worn; every Ta'wiz is written for a specific purpose.

Most Ta'wiz are made up of a small paper containing the prayers which is repeatedly folded and sewn inside a tiny cloth pouch. However, Ta'wiz can also be in the form of lockets, pendants, or carvings on metal. Believers trust that reciting, writing, and wearing the phrases can transfer the power of the words to the individual. However, the user does not believe the words have any effect in themselves, believing instead that they are empowered to do so by Allah. The script is usually written in ink but sometimes written in saffron paste.

The Qur'an itself is sometimes carried as an amulet, following from the belief that every verse in the Qur'an can protect or heal an individual. Believers trust that reciting, writing, and wearing the phrases can transfer the power of the words to the individual.
