This Belarusian doll is completely handmade using the flax plant. The base and head are handmade out of birch wood and the face is hand painted.
Flax dolls Were made in the western part of the former USSR, which is now Belarus, where flax was a major crop. Flax is the plant from which linen cloth is made. The name of the region is translated into English as White Russia, in part because the linen fabric was made into white clothes. Women decorated their linen blouses and skirts with embroidery.
The factory where the flax dolls are made is very small. Since the flax dolls are so intricate, the procedure of making them takes a lot of time.
