This Korean children's book uses the hangul alphabet. "Han" means Korea and "Gul" means letter. The system of writing using the hangul alphabet was created in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great.

Use of the hangul alphabet was intended to create literacy among the largely illiterate Korean population. Hangul replaced the complicated classic Chinese characters that attempted, but failed, to represent the spoken Korean language.

Hangul consists of 24 letters, including 14 consonants and 10 vowels, used to form syllables.
