Tajik Socks: "Pamiri Jurab"
Collection: Everyday Connections
These Tajik socks, called "jurab", are knitted of wool.
Knitted thick wool clothing was developed and worn mainly in a region of Tajikistan with harsh climatic conditions. The jurab can be worn below or above the knees. They can also be with or without heels. Often contrasting colors are used to create traditional designs.
Only women knit jurab, who transfer their skills to daughters and other family members. In the past, Tajik jurab makers knitted them from yarn spun from the fleece of local sheep and goats. Today, women continue to knit jurabs, using both hand spun and factory produced yarn.
Jurabs are made with knitting needles and a crochet hook. In the past, the knitting pin used to be made of branches of willow trees.
