Barrel-and-stick and cup-and-ball toys are traditional children's toys that build skill and manual dexterity. The toy consists of, in the former, a barrel with a small opening attached by a string to a wooden stick, or in the latter, a wooden cup with a handle, and a ball attached to the cup by a string. The name for the toys varies across countries. This toy is a variation on the cup-and-ball game with the goal being to get the ball through the hole.

The main goal of the barrel-and-stick game is to get the barrel onto the stick. While the concept is very easy, mastering the process can require many hours of practice. To play barrel-and-stick, the player holds the stick and lets the barrel hang freely. The player then tosses the barrel upwards attempting to flip the barrel over the stick. For the cup-and-ball toy, the object is to get the ball into the cup. The player holds the cup by the handle and lets the ball hang freely. The player then tosses the ball upward by jerking the arm holding the toy, attempting to catch the ball in the cup.
