Cameroonian Bamiléké People Mask: "Mambu"
Collection: Spiritual Connections
This is a Cameroonian Bamiléké People mask called "mambu" used in masquerades to seek the guidance of supernatural forces.
All-male regulatory associations called Kwifon are in charge of social control and law enforcement and use masks in their rituals. This mask, with its nose with wide nostrils, almond-shaped eyes with globular pupils, C-shaped ears, bulging cheeks, raised eyebrow arches, short forehead and headdress has the characteristic features of the Bamiléké. The half-open mouth is carved with small teeth, the openings of the ears are also pierced. The mask is worn over the head.
Dressed with a feather costume, the mambu character precedes the arrival of more powerful and fearsome masks during burials and funerary celebrations of important association members.
