This is a Congolese Holo People "Pakasa" mask. The helmet mask represents a water buffalo. This helmet mask ‘Pakasa’ was used in dances by a ‘judge’ or peacemaker, if a great altercation broke out in the village. The dancer was supposed to remain anonymous.
The Holo live in the border region between the Congo and Angola.
