This Yoruba beaded cap is made from glass beads.
Glass beads used in Sub-Saharan Africa are imported from Europe, and have been used as trade items for centuries. Among the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, beaded clothing, especially beaded headwear, is reserved for the ceremonial dress of the royal court. The bead craftsmen originally came from the small town of Efon-Alaye and would travel to live as guests of the local king while working on commissioned hats.
