This Spanish doll is wearing a flamenco dress. Flamenco dancers wear this kind of dress for their performances. As part of their outfits, the dancers also wear shawls.
The dress started as a dress worn by the peasant women of Seville in Southern Spain. Originally, the dress was work clothing in bright colors, embellished with ruffles. When their husbands would attend agricultural fairs, the women would come with them, showing off their decorated clothing. Wealthier women copied the style, spreading it beyond its rural roots.
