In Colombia, this dress is worn to dance the "cumbia". Cumbia is a musical style and folkloric dance that combines influences of the African, indigenous and European people who make up Colombia. People believe that the style may have its origins in Guinean Cumbe. It evolved on the Caribbean coast among African slaves.

The cumbia is danced by groups of men and women and represents an elaborate courtship ritual. Gradually, European instruments such as flutes and keyboards were introduced, mingling with the original African drums and clap sticks.

Colombia's national Cumbia Festival has taken place every July in El Banco, since the first event in 1970. Its aim is to preserve, promote and stimulate this genre of Colombian music.
