Afghan Dress Bodice Decoration: "Gul i Peron"
Collection: Everyday Connections
This Afghan beaded bodice patch is referred to as a "Gul i Peron. " The bodice patch is sewn onto a piece of fabric which is in turn sewn onto a dress or blouse. This patch is covered entirely in beads. When the dress or shirt that the gul decorates wears out, the gul may be removed and attached to a new piece of clothing.
"Gul i peron" translates to flower of the dress. The gul is still very popular as a decoration in central Asia, and can come in a variety of designs and sizes. The beaded decoration is often made by threading beads onto a string and then sewing the string onto the surface of the gul.
Some people believe that the gul will scare away the evil eye, particularly if there is a mirror in the center of the design.
