This doll may represent the Palenque Afro-Colombian community. The Palenqueros speak a language that is a blend of African languages and Spanish.

Palenque was settled south of Cartegena and was governed by run-away African slaves.

To earn money, the women of Palenque decided to market the fruit that was grown surrounding their village to the city of Cartegena. The Palenqueras would pack their hand-woven baskets full of ripe tropical fruits, put on their traditional African dress and make the long and exhausting journey into the bustling city of Cartagena by foot.

The Palenqueras became a symbol for both Cartegena, even though they did not come from the city, and for Colombia.
