Croat Jewish Holy Symbol: Star of David
Collection: Spiritual Connections
This Croatian artwork shows the Jewish holy symbol the Star of David, called "Magen David" in Hebrew. Today the symbol is associated with Judaism.
The earliest verifiable reference to the star in connection with Jewish communities comes from the 1600s in Vienna when a hexagram was used to mark the Jewish quarter. The star became part of synagogue architecture around the same time.
The artist, Jadranka Mihajlovic Munitić, was born in Dubrovnik and has been exhibiting her artwork for many years at the centuries old Dubrovnik Synagogue, situated in the Jewish Street, in the heart of Old Town Dubrovnik.
Judaism is a religion in which people believe that there is one god (monotheism), the same god the Christians and Muslims worship, who created the universe and has a personal relationship with humans. The religion was founded in Israel about 4,000 years ago by Abraham, who entered into a covenant with God to follow the laws of God. Moses received the Jewish holy book from God. Scholars disagree about whether there is an afterlife. Jews are waiting for the Messiah who may bring about an afterlife
