This Seminole doll wears a traditional outfit, using patchwork quilting techniques. Quilt making was not originally a frequent activity among the Seminoles. Before fabric became available, their clothing was made of hides and skins.

The Seminole quilting style really developed in the early 1900s. In Florida, the Seminoles had lived in isolation in the Everglades. They would trade at trading posts for items they could not make themselves. When the trading posts closed, resources became scarce in the Everglades. Tourist camps opened to fill the economic void. Patchwork fabric, made of multiple pieces of cloth sewn together, emerged around the 1910s when sewing machines had become available to lower income people, including the Seminole. Patchwork became integrated in Seminole fashion and style. Seminole dolls would wear patchwork clothing. Along with hairstyles, painted features, patchwork, and beads, the dolls mimicked traditional Seminole styles and clothing.
