The kilt is a wrap-around skirt woven of wool in a tartan pattern. It has pleats at the sides and back. The kilt is most often worn by men on formal occasions and at some sporting events.
The earliest kilt, from the 1500s, was full-length belted garment whose upper half could be worn as a cloak. In the 1720s, the kilt was shortened and pleats sewn in, equivalent to the modern kilt design.
