This Hawaiian knee drum, known as "puniu," is used in traditional hulas. The hula involved dance accompanied by sound, including music, song, prayers and a variety of sound-producing instruments.

The puniu is made from a coconut shell, with a shark skin membrane stretched over the opening. It has attached braided cords. The drum is played with a thick two-ply cord of coir fiber. The puniu is tied above the knee.

The puniu has become an instrument in its own right, with particular methods of playing.
