Mahjong is a tile-based game, originally from China in the 1800s. The game spread throughout the world in the early 20th century.
The game is played with 144 tiles. 108 tiles have Chinese characters and symbols that make up three suits: dots, bamboo, and characters. 28 tiles are four sets of honors tiles: four winds and three dragons. There are one each of eight flower and seasons tiles.
The object is to make hands or melds of particular combinations of tiles, so that all 14 tiles in a player's hands are used.
