The kirar is a six-string Eritrean guitar, held under the left arm. The instrument has two parts. A membrane-covered flat bowl acts as a resonator or sound box. A V-shaped neck constructed of two pieces of wood is joined at the top by a yolk and the arms extend into and through the resonator. The strings are attached to the yolk and the resonator.
The strings may be plucked or strummed. The fingers of the left hand press on the strings to change the pitch. The right hand plucks or strums the strings.
