This rattle is from the Tiwa Pueblo People. The Tiwa live primarily in New Mexico.
The rattle is made from a gourd which has been soaked in water and flattened. The gourd is then attached to a wood handle. It is painted with traditional symbols of the Tiwa.
Such rattles can be used to accompany a drum's rhythm.
