This display doll represents one of Newfoundland's Christmas traditions. Villagers during the Twelve Days of Christmas cover their heads with pillow cases and walk through the town, knocking on doors and asking if any mummers are allowed in for a drink and a song. As part of this tradition, the host attempts to identify the disguised figures. If the host is successful, the identified mummer is unveiled. The host traditionally offers the mummer a piece of Christmas cake and a cup of something to drink. In some places, if the host does not guess who the Mummers are, the host must join the Mummers in their merry-making. This mummer carries a bottle of screech rum, a famous drink in Newfoundland.
