Polish Display Dolls: "Stroje Krakowskie"
Collection: Everyday Connections
These dolls wear a version of the traditional Polish costume.
The Krakow festival costume, called "Stroje Krakowskies, is the best-known of Polish folk costumes, becoming in effect the national costume of Poland. Its fabrics, cut, color, and adornments, changed repeatedly, creating a large variety of versions.
The Krakow costumes have acquired a symbolic meaning. This is especially true of the man's red square cap, decorated with peacock feathers.
The women wear white shirts with broad sleeves and collars decorated with lace, colorful vests with sequins and rich embroidery, strings of coral beads, flowery skirts in bold patterns, partly covered with white lace aprons (plus multiple petticoats underneath), and wreaths of flowers with multi-colored ribbons in their braided hair for girls or colorful, flowery kerchiefs for mature women. The high-laced red boots have heels with metal tips, to emphasize each stamp, click, or jump.
