This Cameroonian Bamileke People power mask, called "nkang", is made to honor the king, "Fon," and his royal ancestors. The nkang mask is used at funerals of important members of the society. Such masks are also used during annual seasonal festivals. The nkang mask symbolizes male authority and strength.

The colorful beads are the most important part of this mask and are symbols of great wisdom. The cowry shells depict wealth. The wood pieces on top are carved to represent the Cameroon Grasslands headdress. The mask is made to be worn on top of the head.

The Bamileke reserve their highest allegiance for their linear ancestors whose spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased. Recognizing the importance of the skull, representations of the head are found in nearly all decorated ceremonial objects.
