Cambodian Woman's Skirt and Blouse: "Sampot"
Collection: Everyday Connections
The sampot is the national garment of Cambodia. It refers to the rectangular piece of fabric that ties into a skirt around the lower part of the body. There are many variations for the sampot, depending on the wearer's social class.
The sampot is worn by men and women. It measures somewhere between five and eight feet long and three feet wide. The ends are often sewn together to create a tube and then the fabric at the waist is pulled tight to secure the sampot onto the wearer's waist.
The Cambodians are known for dyeing the silk threads before weaving them into fabric, creating intricate patterns in the silk material.
