Pakistani Muslim Holy Book: "Qur'an"
Collection: Spiritual Connections
The Qur'an, literally meaning "the recitation", is the central religious text of Islam. Muslims consider the Qur'an to be the verbatim word of God, providing the complete code for Muslims to live a good, chaste, abundant and rewarding life in obedience to the commandments of Allah, in this life and to gain salvation in the next.
Muslims believe the Qur'an was revealed to Muhammad from God through the angel Gabriel over a period of approximately 23 years beginning in 610 CE, when Muhammad was 40, and concluding in 632 CE, the year of his death. Muslims further believe that the Qur'an was precisely memorized, recited and exactly written down by Muhammad's companions after each revelation was dictated by him.
The Qur'an is divided into 114 suras of unequal length which are classified either as Meccan or Medinan depending upon their place and time of revelation. Shortly after Muhammad's death the Qur'an was compiled into a single book. The present form of the Qur'an text in Modern Standard Arabic is accepted by most scholars as the original version.
Muslims believe the Qur'an proves that Muhammad was a prophet, in a series of prophets who received divine messages, starting with Adam, regarded in Islam as the first prophet. Next come Ibrahim (Abraham), Moses who revealed the Torah, David who wrote the Book of Psalms, and Jesus, who wrote the Gospel. The Qur'an assumes familiarity with major narratives recounted in Jewish and Christian scriptures, summarizing some, dwelling at length on others and in some cases presenting alternative accounts and interpretations of events.
Islam is the largest and state religion in Pakistan, with about 95% of the population. Islam came to what is now Pakistan in the 700s.
