Moroccan Man's Hat: "Fez"
Collection: Everyday Connections
The origin of the fez, also referred to as a "tarboosh," is not clear, but it probably derived from ancient Greek headwear. In the 1800s, the tarboosh gained wide acceptance the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and Northern Africa when the Ottoman Empire controlled that region. It was worn primarily by Muslim men throughout that area.
The name fez may refer to Fez, the former capital city of Morocco, which once produced the hat's red dye, made from crimson berries. Wearing a fez in Morocco is a nationalist statement and was seen as a protest against the former French occupation. The king of Morocco is the only leader in the region to wear a fez for ceremonial purposes.
