Mongolian Hat: "Toortsog"
Collection: Everyday Connections
This is a traditional Mongolian hat called a "toortsog."
Mongolia has more than 20 tribes living within its boundaries. There were more than 400 different styles of headdress in this region as every tribe has its own style, with different shapes, adornments, and colors. Additionally, the hats would vary according to their wearer and purpose: there were hats for the young and old, men and women, summer and winter, holidays and ceremonies, and everyday work.
In summer, Mongols wear a flat-topped "toortsog" hat consisting of six gores. The Toortsog had an upper and a lower part. The upper part is sewn from six separate pieces. Married women were not permitted to wear this hat, only girls and men.
