This Burmese puppet is one of the characters in traditional Burmese puppet theater, called "yoke thé." Puppet theater in Burma dates from the 15th century. In the 19th century, it reached its peak of popularity.
A full marionette set includes 28 characters and stage scenery. A number of characters represent the creation of the world, and members of the court, including princes, pages and a jester.
