Peruvian Burial Doll: "Chancay Burial Doll"
Collection: Spiritual Connections
This Peruvian doll is referred to as a burial doll because similar dolls have been found in graves.
The doll comes from the central coast of Peru where the Chancay civilization ruled between 1000 and 1470. The burial dolls were made of woven fabric and stuffed with reed or fiber. The dolls are dressed according to their gender and so are believed to represent human beings rather than gods or spirits. Some of the dolls hold objects in their hands. The dolls' actual function is unknown at this time.
People living in towns near the burials sites have created "Chancay dolls" for tourist trade, using fragments of ancient cloth that blew out of disturbed grave sites.
