Collection: Everyday Connections
This Czech marionette is the character Hurvinek. The character was created to be the child of Spejbl, a popular character in the Pilsen Puppet Theater.
The Czech Republic has a long history of puppetry, being a chief form of entertainment in Prague since the 1600s. Puppet theater was performed in the Czech language.
Hurvinek first appeared on stage together with Spejbl in 1926. The present figures of Spejbl and Hurvinek were made in 1964 based on a design of Radko Haken, a famous member of the Pilsen Puppet Theater ensemble.
