This hat of West Africa's Fulani people, the "noppire," has great cultural significance. The Fulani take tremendous care with their personal appearance, and this special hat is one of the few things that is common to their people.

The Fulani people of West Africa are the largest nomadic group in the world. Their range includes the modern countries of Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Guinea, Senegal, and Ghana. As a group, they contain a vast array of diverse people who were conquered and became a part of the Fulani through the spread of Islam.

Through their nomadic lifestyle as herders and traders, the Fulani established numerous trade routes in West Africa. Many times the Fulani go to local markets and interact with the people, getting news and spreading it through much of West Africa.
