Silk and cotton weaving by hand is an age-old tradition in Laos. Intricate and beautiful designs are produced by Lao village women on simple wooden framed hand and foot operated looms. The fabrics are woven from hand grown, spun and dyed cotton or silk thread. The looms are usually located in the coolest part of the house which is beneath the first floor. Houses are built high enough to provide headroom on the ground floor, and the relatively cool, shaded area is utilized for both work and relaxation as well as for storage.

In some northern Lao provinces a few groups of weavers still laboriously hand-pick intricate brocade patterns, making shawls, shoulder cloths, tube skirts, head cloths and scarves. In a few places the textiles still have ritual significance for their makers, or are produced for temple offerings.
