Korean Woman's Traditional Dress: "Hanbok"

The term hanbok refers to the formal traditional costume of North Korea. Koreans have worn hanbok since antiquity, at least since 50 BCE. Today's hanbok is mostly modeled after royal clothing from the Joseon era, from the 1400s to 1900s. Before the introduction of western-style clothing, hanbok was everyday wear. Now it is used primarily for special occasions. UNESCO is set to declare hanbok-wearing and the formal set of customs accompanying the practice as an "intangible cultural heritage".

There are several pieces to hanbok. The "jeogori" is the upper garment of the outfit, which covers the arms and upper part of the wearer's body. Decorative strings tie the front panels together. "Chima" refers to the skirt, now held up by shoulder straps.
