These dolls portray two people playing the game of shogi, often referred to as Japanese chess.

Shogi is a strategy board game for two players. It is one of the most popular board games in Japan. It derived from the earlier Indian game chaturanga.

The board has 81 squares in a grid of nine ranks and nine files. Each player commands 20 pentagonal pieces of different sizes representing, in rough equivalence to international chess, the king, a rook, a bishop, two gold generals, two silver generals, two knights, two lances and nine pawns. As in other chess-related games, the object is for one player to checkmate his opponent's king.
