These Israeli Jewish prayer boxes are called "tefillin," Hebrew for "phylacteries." The two black leather boxes contain scriptural passages. The boxes are bound by black leather straps on the left hand and on the head and worn for the morning services on all days of the year except Sabbaths and scriptural holy days.

Both the tefillin of the hand and of the head contain four passages found in the Torah. The Torah commands Jews to place their prayers on their arms and on their foreheads, to bind their hearts and minds to God.
