This type of wooden window is found in older homes in Afghanistan. The lattice work at the top, called "jali," allows some air to circulate, but protects the inhabitants from the strong sunshine. Small pieces of cedar or walnut wood are fitted together by hand, traditionally without glue, into intricate geometric patterns. The wood offers privacy. The wood is set into the clay structure of the traditional home.
