Indian Shoes: "Juttis"
Collection: Everyday Connections
These Indian shoes, called "juttis," also called "khussa," are extensively decorated. Juttis are made with leather and are hand stitched. They are famous for their fine embroidery, done with beads, sequins, thread, and mirrors.
Juttis have no left or right foot distinction, but over time take the shape of the foot that is worn regularly. They usually have flat soles, and are similar in design for both women and men.
Men's juttis have a sharp extended tip, called a "nokh," which curves upwards like a traditional mustache. These particular shoes' nokhs are flat against the top of the shoe, although it is likely they are intended for men. They may be worn for casual use as well as to parties and functions. They are very popular to wear to weddings, both for the wedding party and the guests.
Juttis have evolved into several localized design variations, even depending upon the shoemaker.
